The Butchulla people received Native Title determination on 13 December 2019, over our traditional Country (land sea and sky), which is located on the Fraser Coast of Queensland. It spans an area south from Double Island Point, westward to Bauple Mountain and then north to the Burrum River, it also includes all of K’gari (Fraser Island).

However, the island is subject to a separate successful Native Title determination issued on 24 October 2014 [see – QCD2014/015 – Butchulla People #2, Bronwyn De Satge & Ors on Behalf of the Butchulla People #2 v State of Queensland & Ors]

The Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (BNTAC) is the Prescribed Body Corporate entrusted with the responsibility of holding Native Title on Trust for the Butchulla people. BNTAC’s core objectives encompass the protection and nurturing of Country (land, sea and sky), traditions, lore, language, and culture. Additionally, we are committed to providing economic, social, and cultural benefits to the Butchulla people, including initiatives such social enterprise service, Djaa and Narawi (land and Sea) services, member arts-culture-community services, cultural heritage management and native title services.

The recognition of Butchulla People’s Native Title Rights and Interests on the mainland and adjacent waters including islands in the sandy straits was achieved in Cronin on behalf of the Butchulla People (land & sea claim #2) v State of Queensland [2019] FCA 2082 (fedcourt.gov.au). We are dedicated to upholding these rights, responsibilities and ensuring the wellbeing and prosperity of our community in accordance with our cultural values, protocols, practices and responsibilities on Country (land, sea and sky)
