About BNTAC

Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC)

Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (BNTAC) serves as the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) responsible for safeguarding and upholding the Native Title rights responsibilities and interests of the Butchulla people. Here’s how we carry out our PBC responsibilities, placing traditional decision-making, Butchulla Lore, and Culture at the heart of our organisation:
Our Role as the Prescribed Body Corporate
BNTAC, as the Prescribed Body Corporate for the Butchulla People, plays a vital role in the maintenance and protection of our Native Title rights and interests. We are dedicated to ensuring that our cultural heritage and ancestral connections to the land, sea, and sky are preserved for current and future generations.
Engaging with the Butchulla Community
To maintain a strong connection to our cultural heritage, we actively engage with the Butchulla Community, including councils and committees, as well as the Butchulla Elders Committee. These interactions are integral to our decision-making processes and ensure that the wisdom of our Elders is honoured and valued.
Good Governance Practices
BNTAC is committed to adhering to good governance practices that are consistent with our Rule Book. This commitment ensures that our organisation complies with the relevant regulations and laws, such as the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act). Good governance helps us effectively represent and protect the Native Title rights and responsibilities of the Butchulla people.
Monitoring Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs)
We diligently monitor all Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) between the Butchulla people and various parties, particularly in cases of mining or development activities. This oversight guarantees that these agreements are properly followed and implemented, and that the best interests of the Butchulla people are upheld.
Heritage Preservation and Protection
Recognising the lasting impact of mining and development activities on Butchulla Country, we are dedicated to minimising these impacts. We do this through heritage survey work that identifies and protects significant cultural areas and sites. This ensures the preservation of our cultural heritage for generations to come.
Promoting Connection to Country and Supporting Butchulla Culture
As a PBC, we are not solely focused on the legal aspects of Native Title. We also take pride in carrying out various programs that strengthen our community’s connection to Country and support the vitality of Butchulla culture. These programs are essential for nurturing the wellbeing, cultural identity, and traditions of the Butchulla People.
At Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, we wholeheartedly embrace our responsibility to serve as the custodians of Butchulla Country and its cultural heritage. We are dedicated to preserving and protecting our unique identity, creating meaningful connections with our community, and ensuring that our culture remains strong and vibrant for future generations.
