New Green Life at the MILBI Centre: A Celebration of Collaboration and Caring for Country

New Green Life at the MILBI Centre: A Celebration of Collaboration and Caring for Country

The MILBI Centre has a fresh new look, and it’s all thanks to a collaboration between local organisations committed to caring for Country, enhancing community spaces, and supporting meaningful partnerships.

A vibrant new landscaped garden now stretches along the recently installed Colorbond boundary fence, bringing colour, texture, and life to the site. More importantly, it represents the shared effort of UniSC, BNTAC, Envy Landscape Supplies, and the Maryborough Aboriginal Corporation (MACorp), all working together with purpose and pride.

Over the past few weeks, the approximately 20 metre garden bed has transformed from bare ground into a thriving native plant display. Carefully designed to meet council screening requirements and to honour plant species culturally significant to Butchulla Country, the new garden includes:

  • 4 × Banksia robur (Swamp Banksia)
  • 4 × Callistemon ‘Silver Cloud’ (Bottlebrush)
  • 6 × Acmena smithii ‘Minor’ (Dwarf Lilly Pilly)
  • 6 × Austromyrtus dulcis (Midgen Berry)
  • 12 × Melaleuca linariifolia ‘Claret Tops’

The team used 6 m³ of nutrient rich topsoil and 3 m³ of Organic Forest Chip mulch, ensuring the garden has the best possible start. All works were completed safely and in full compliance with council regulations, including the use of non‑conductive hand tools and shallow excavation methods.

To help the garden establish strong roots, a four‑week watering program began immediately after installation. This regular care has supported healthy growth, reduced transplant shock, and set the garden up for a thriving future.

This project isn’t just about landscaping. It’s a celebration of community.
The work was made possible through the combined efforts of:

  • UniSC, bringing expertise and student engagement
  • BNTAC, ensuring cultural alignment and leadership
  • MACorp, offering hands‑on support
  • Envy Landscape Supplies, providing quality materials

Together, these organisations have demonstrated the strength of regional partnerships and a shared commitment to improving community spaces while honouring Butchulla Country.

With the installation now complete, the MILBI Centre’s new garden will continue to grow and flourish over the coming months. Visitors can look forward to a richer, greener, and more welcoming environment. One that blends cultural significance, environmental care, and beautiful native plants.
