Land and Sea Rangers: Our Guardians of the Coast on Butchulla Country (land, sea and sky)

Land and Sea Rangers: Our Guardians of the Coast on Butchulla Country (land, sea and sky)

by | 13 Oct, 2023 | Blog

At BNTAC, our Land and Sea Rangers play a vital role in preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the Fraser Coast. On September 7, 2023, our dedicated team embarked on a mission that exemplifies their unwavering commitment to our environment. Let’s dive into the details of their recent work around Turtle Rescue and Release and a local mangrove survey.

Date: September 7, 2023 Location: Ti Tree Road, Urangan

Works Carried Out: Survey of Mangroves

The day began with a survey of the mangroves along Ti Tree Road, Urangan. Our Rangers Kaile Clarke and Frank Green meticulously examined the delicate ecosystem, documenting its health and any potential threats.

Findings: A Stranded Turtle in Need

During the survey, our Rangers stumbled upon a heart-wrenching discovery—a stranded turtle trapped in a tidal pool. Acting swiftly, they knew they needed to intervene to ensure the turtle’s survival.

Comments/Observations: A Call to Action

With urgency, our Rangers reached out to Holly from the Turtle Identification and Tracking (TIT) organisation. Holly requested that we not only rescue the stranded turtle but also collect critical data for their photo identification and research efforts. Our team’s dedication to collaboration and conservation shone through.

Lessons Learnt: Preparedness Matters

This rescue highlighted the importance of being well-prepared. Our Land and Sea Rangers always carry a turtle rescue kit, a testament to their readiness to respond to such situations.

Future Actions: Vigilance and Collaboration

As our Rangers successfully rescued the stranded turtle and removed a derelict crab pot from the area, they recognised the significance of continued vigilance. They plan to regularly survey the area after north winds, as these winds can push sick turtles ashore. Additionally, they aim to collaborate with the Fraser Coast Regional Council to address the issue of accumulating debris, such as old crab pots.

At BNTAC, we are immensely proud of our Land and Sea Rangers’ unwavering dedication to safeguarding our coastal treasures. Their work not only protects the environment but also creates collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the community.

Stay tuned for more updates on our Rangers’ incredible conservation efforts as they continue to be the guardians of the coast, ensuring a brighter future for our precious marine life and ecosystems.

Together, we can and are making a difference on Butchulla Country (land, sea and sky).

With gratitude
