The Tourism Development Program is continuing to build momentum, following on from the solid foundations set by Alexis Rashleigh in establishing a clear and intentional direction for cultural tourism on Butchulla Country. Over recent months, the team has been actively pursuing new opportunities, refining our approach, and strengthening partnerships across the region.
A key highlight has been our growing partnership with Pacific Whale Foundation Eco Adventures Australia (PWFEAA). Together, we have been co‑designing and adapting the Seven Island Tour, incorporating cultural insight and knowledge informed by Travis Page’s suggestions.
Both Travis Page and Kaile Clarke have taken on guiding roles, supported by attendance from Kynomi Saunders and Elijah Mason, providing valuable hands‑on experience and professional development for our team. These opportunities have offered practical training in interpretation, visitor engagement, and on‑Country storytelling, strengthening our capacity as cultural tourism leaders.
With the Easter school holidays approaching, we are set to be back on the water with PWFEAA. Work is also underway to develop new cultural content for the upcoming whale watch season, beginning in July. This collaboration is shaping an authentic, meaningful visitor experience that honours Butchulla language, stories, and Country.
The expansion of cultural tourism isn’t limited to the water. On Tuesday 24 February, Travis will guide the first Butchulla Seasonal Gardens tour at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, marking the beginning of a series of five weekly tours.
These tours offer visitors the chance to explore the Butchulla Seasonal Garden, learn about native plants significant to Butchulla people, and understand the cultural knowledge embedded within seasonal cycles. This initiative represents a powerful collaboration between BNTAC and the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, further strengthening cultural visibility within the regional arts and tourism landscape.
The Tourism Development Program continues to grow with purpose—grounded in cultural knowledge, community development, and meaningful partnerships. Each new tour, training opportunity, and collaboration adds to a sustainable pathway for Butchulla‑led tourism that showcases the richness of Country and culture.
There is more to come, and 2026 is already shaping up to be an exciting year for the program!
