by | 13 Oct, 2023 | Blog

At BNTAC (Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation), we are dedicated to empowering our community members and enhancing their skills, knowledge, and opportunities. We take immense pride in supporting our community in various projects, including training and education. Today, we are excited to share the journey of our Land-Sea (Djaa Narawi)Rangers, represented by Kaile Clarke and Frank Green (in picture), as they embark on Coxswain training at the Urangan Boat Harbour.

Coxswain Training Program

Kaile Clarke, and Frank Green are taking part in a comprehensive Coxswain training program that aims to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively handle boats on Butchulla Sea Country. This program, hosted at the Urangan Boat Harbour, is tailored to ensure they gain a profound understanding of boating
operations, safety and maritime regulations.

Learning about Boats

Under the expert guidance of experienced trainers, BNTAC Land-Sea Rangers Kaile Clarke, and Frank Green are immersing themselves in the world of boats. They are learning about various types of vessels, their components, and the intricacies of boat maintenance. This knowledge will enable them to operate boats with confidence and competence to undertake activities and look after Butchulla Sea Country.

Handling Boats Appropriately

One of the core objectives of the Coxswain training is to teach the art of handling boats responsibly and in an appropriate manner. Our participants are gaining hands-on experience in navigating vessels, understanding weather conditions, and ensuring the safety of passengers and crew. This training not only instils valuable boating skills but also emphasises the importance of responsible and safe stewardship/journey on the sea and its resources.

A Strong Connection to the Sea

For the Butchulla community, the sea holds immense cultural significance. This training program represents a meaningful step towards strengthening the community’s connection to Sea Country and waterways. BNTAC’s Djaa Narawi Rangers, Kaile Clarke, and Frank Green are becoming stewards of the sea, embodying the rich maritime heritage of our people.

The Future

Upon completing their Coxswain training, Land-Sea (Djaa Narawi) Rangers, Kaile Clarke, and Frank Green will be well-equipped to pursue careers with BNTAC and/or look at other opportunities in the maritime industry or engage in recreational boating activities. Their journey symbolises the dedication of BNTAC in nurturing the skills and aspirations of our community members, ultimately creating a brighter future for all.

We are incredibly proud of BNTAC Land-Sea (Djaa Narawi) Rangers, Kaile Clarke, and Frank Green as they take on this new challenge. Their journey stands as an inspiration to our community, demonstrating the potential for growth and success when provided with the right opportunities and support. We look forward to witnessing their continued progress and success in their Coxswain training and beyond.

With gratitude
Veronica Bird, General Manager | BNTAC
