Butchulla Representative Selected as CoralWatch Ambassador

Butchulla Representative Selected as CoralWatch Ambassador

by | 18 Mar, 2026 | Uncategorized

BNTAC is proud to celebrate the exciting news that Mitchell (Mitch) Allan, a valued employee of the Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, has been successfully accepted into the CoralWatch Ambassador Program for 2026.

Mitchell was chosen from a competitive field of applicants and will represent BNTAC at the CoralWatch Ambassador Workshop held from 18–22 February 2026 at the Heron Island Research Station. This intensive, place-based workshop connects community leaders, educators, scientists, and advocates who are passionate about reef health and ocean stewardship.

As part of the program, Mitch will participate in hands-on training, fieldwork, and science communication activities that build skills in environmental monitoring, citizen science, community engagement, and cultural knowledge-sharing. CoralWatch, housed within The University of Queensland, plays a vital role in empowering people across Australia and internationally to contribute data and awareness that supports coral reef health.

Representing BNTAC, Mitch will bring forward a strong Butchulla perspective, ensuring that First Nations cultural values, connection to Sea Country, and Traditional Knowledge remain central to conversations about reef protection and sustainability.

Upon completion of the workshop, Mitch will be recognised as a CoralWatch Ambassador, joining a network of volunteers who engage communities, schools, and organisations in reef monitoring, conservation education, and positive environmental action. This role is entirely voluntary but carries a significant impact – ambassadors help strengthen public understanding and inspire participation in caring for the Great Barrier Reef.

BNTAC congratulates Mitch on this outstanding achievement and looks forward to the leadership, knowledge, and inspiration he will bring back to Butchulla Country and our Caring for Country programs.

Well done, Mitch! Your dedication to Sea Country is something our whole community can be proud of.
